I was born in Livadeia, Greece, a small town two hours away from Athens, close to Delphi. I was admitted to the Physics Department of the University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 1967. I graduated with honors and worked for several months under the supervision of Prof. G. Contopoulos on the "Integrals of motion and resonances in a dipole magnetic". This work opened the door for me to the world of charged particles and plasmas.

In 1972 I became a graduate student at the University of Manchester (UMIST), U.K., and worked for a year under the supervision of Dr. K.M. Young (currently a member of the plasma physics group at Princeton, USA). In 1973 I moved to USA and continued my studies as a graduate student at the Department of Physics of the University of Maryland, where I obtained both my M. Sc. (1976) and my Ph. D. (1979). I worked with Profs Dennis Papadopoulos and Mukul Kundu who were my advisors, while the subject of my Ph.D. thesis research was Plasma Properties and radiation signatures of current driven active region loops .
